Palm Plaza, Dandenong

Project Information

Location: Dandenong
Client: City Greater Dandenong
Service Category: Concrete & Civil
Duration: 3 weeks

Project Overview

APS Civil was engaged by the City of Greater Dandenong to upgrade the concrete paving and surrounds at Palm Plaza, a busy pedestrian link running alongside Dandenong Square in the centre of the activity precinct.

The plaza carries steady foot traffic throughout the day, with shopfronts, entries and public transport all connecting through it. The upgrade needed to be built to a high finish in a highly visible public space, while keeping the plaza open and safe for the people using it.

Scope of Works

  • Removal of existing concrete paving and kerb
  • Installation of new drainage
  • Construction of new kerb
  • Construction of new coloured concrete paving
  • Reinstatement of garden beds
  • Installation of new garden bed fencing
  • Reinstatement of edges and tie-ins to surrounding surfaces

Challenges

The main challenge was managing pedestrians. Palm Plaza is one of the busiest parts of central Dandenong, and works had to be staged so that people could keep moving through the area safely while concrete was being removed, poured and cured. That meant tight control of the work zone, clear pedestrian routes and careful coordination with adjacent businesses and building entries.

Achieving the required levels was the other constraint. The new paving had to pick up existing entries, kerb lines, drainage points and surrounding surfaces that were all already in place, so falls had to be worked out and held across the whole area to get drainage right without creating trip hazards at the tie-ins.

Outcome

The upgrade was completed to the satisfaction of the City of Greater Dandenong. The plaza now has new coloured concrete paving, upgraded drainage, new kerb and reinstated garden beds with new fencing, giving central Dandenong a tidier and more durable pedestrian space.
